It is Monday and again I am joining in the meme over at Mentor Texts.
Hop on over and join in over at the Mentor Text Blog. Just click on the picture Since I joined in with the meme last I have read:
The sequel to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. This book was good but I wasn't as caught up in it as Roll of Thunder. I notice some of my students now reading Roll of Thunder, so maybe they will give this a go, possibly!
The Scorpio Races - I am sure lots of readers have loved this. The writing is very good and the story is as well. It just didn't appeal so much to me because of the violence. However now having taken part in #titletalk chat just now, I think I will book talk it and see what happens in my class. My class know I don't like gore in books - however they probably handle it better!
I am not sure what I am going to read in the coming week, I am hoping Rick Riordan's latest will be in our NZ shops tomorrow but not sure. If it is I will be reading The Mark of Athena. One of my students wants it after me - we are on spring break here, so I should have it read by time we go back to school.
Hmm... I've heard wonderful things about Scorpio Races (and I adored Raven Boys), so that one is on my list. I am okay with violence in books for me, but it sounds like it's not one I could put in my classroom (I'm a 1st-5th resource teacher, so even if a book is okay for 5th I have to be careful!)
ReplyDeleteI get put off by too much violence in books, too. I found the Maze Runner books too much but I was OK with Scorpio Races and Hunger Games.
ReplyDelete@Maria Scorpio Races is probably about the same as Hunger Games in terms of violence... in our school you need a parent's permission if you are 4th grade or younger to take it out.
It will be interesting to see what your students think of it. My husband and I both loved it but my 6th grader hasn't really gotten into it like he got into Hunger Games.
I managed the level of violence in Hunger Games and Scorpio Races - just. And of course Insurgent got quite bloody at times too! Yes will be interesting to see what my students think.
DeleteI really liked The Scorpio Races. It didn't bother me re the violence as I was so connected to the story. But definitely a young adult read - not for elementary school. Like Katya posted above I found that The Maze Runner series was very gruesome although I still read them!
ReplyDeleteThe Scorpio Races was good, but it is more imaginative in a way because of those horses, so I can see why some students wouldn't like it as much. I like the Mildred Taylor books & probably some are not aware of them. I'll be interested in seeing what your students feel about them. Happy Spring Break!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any Maggie S since the second in The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. Just not a fan. BUT. Everyone seems to adore Raven Boys so I am going to give that a try. I can't wait for Mark of Athena!
ReplyDeleteYes bring on Mark of Athena!
DeleteThe Mildred Taylor books are wonderful for teaching historical fiction - we start with Roll of Thunder and then students pick up the sequel to read on their own.
ReplyDeleteA good point, I just found Roll of Thunder so much easier to read and delighted when they outwitted 'the whites'!
DeleteI admired The Scorpio Races more than loved it, but I was SOOO excited that I had the opportunity to get my copy signed by Maggie S. at an event last weekend. I can see how the gruesomeness of it could be off-putting.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have the book signed. All the comments have decided me to uptalk the book to my top students and see what they think!
DeleteSome students really enjoy Mildred D. Taylor's books. I have read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, but maybe I should pick up Let the Circle Be Unbroken, too.
ReplyDeleteI've heard the audio for Scorpio Races is just fabulous. I read it in the spring, and I loved it. It's my favorite Maggie book.... Raven Boys is a close second.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of the audio for Scorpio Races. I can totally appreciate the book and the writing, the horses just creeped me out. I have a thing with horses. The book was well done though!
