It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

It is Monday and again I am joining in the meme over at Mentor Texts.
Hop on over and join in over at the Mentor Text Blog. Just click on the picture below.

This past week I read:
A book for younger readers - 7-9 years would enjoy it and some of my 10 and 11year olds might as well.

Another great Marty McGuire book, and if a class is thinking about building a worm farm a really fun book for them to read.

An Abundance of Katherines which is a YA book.  I can't say I really connected with this book, it was my first John Green book. I think I will need to read another of his to judge if I like his writing. Perhaps this was not a good one to start with.

For professional reading:
This book is by Janet Angelillo. I found it really helpful for myself as Janet models a way to proceed with scaffolding students to think more deeply as readers.  I will be using her ideas in my classroom when I return in mid July.

For the coming week I plan on reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini - fantasy. The series comes highly recommended by one of my students so I decided to read the first one in it.

  1. I need to get that Mary McGuire book. It looks so cute. I loved Eragon & you will too, especially if you like fantasy. I enjoyed the John Green book-very high school I think more than anything. The Fault In Our Stars Is Awesome! Thanks Kathryn!

  2. Yay for Marty! I need to move those Franny K. Stein books higher up in my TBR--I think my 8 and 10 would like those. Do you think you'll read The Fault in Our Stars? I'm planning on it for this summer.

    1. Yes Fault in Our Stars seems a good bet, so may try that one some time this year.

  3. My students love Frannie ... shhh! I've never actually read one. Dunno why cause I bet it wouldn't take that long.
We're excited for Kate Messner to visit our school in the fall. Debating whether or not I can deal with a worm farm in the library. We loved the first Marty!
I've read Paper Towns and The Fault in our Stars. I liked them ... but I laughed more with his videos. Have you seen his Fitness for Nerds video (look for vlogbrothers on YouTube)? Haven't read Abundance of Katherines yet, though.
    Happy #bookaday summer!

  4. I have seen many people say similar things about An Abundance of Katherines, but I think it's my favorite John Green. I really like Paper Towns as well. The Fault in Our Stars was really hard to read-very depressing! Here is my list http://wp.me/pzUn5-13b

    1. I am not that good with depressing books, however I might try it still, so many good things have been said about it.

      Thanks for the list.

  5. The only John Green book I've read (so far) has been The Fault in Our Stars. I try and stay away from depressing books as well but this one was worth it. I would suggest not reading it in public though since it is quite emotional! :)

  6. Oh! The Franky K. Stein looks like it could be a potential for the chapter book panel for Cybils this coming year. I'll have to check it out!

Have a fabulous reading week and if you get a chance stop by There's A Book to see what I'm up to as well. :)

  7. I will be honest, Katherines is my least favorite John Green (though I love all of them). I would have recommended you start with Alaska, Paper Towns or Fault.

I bought Franny K. Stein right at the end of the school year (though Scholastic sent 2, 3, and 4 but not 1 in their pack...)- I am glad to hear that it is good.

Don't you love Marty?!? She is one of my favorite protagonists in a book ever- I wish I could be her friend.

  8. I have GOT to read the Marty McGuire books-have heard so many great things about them.

I haven't read any of John Green's books yet-a few of them are on my loooooong TBR list. :)
