It's Monday - What are you Reading?

It is Monday and again I am joining in the meme over at Mentor Texts.

I read this and enjoyed it. I have a few more in the series that I will put into the class library and I hope some of the girls will enjoy it. Maybe I could talk some boys into it too!  They are so mad on the Greek Gods from the Rick Riordan books. Recently I put the George O'Connor graphic novels of the Greek Gods into the class library and they have been ambushed.  Pow! Very popular.

This was one of my Newbery challenges, I started with a little trepidation, readers seem to either love or hate it!  However while I was not head over heels in love with it I found it interesting. A somewhat mixture of genres - I was reminded of Lois Lowry and the The Giver with the idea of sameness and differences on the planet they go to to free their Dad.

It was a pleasure to read this 50th Edition and read about the author and see some of her drafting of the book at the end of the book.

This week I am going to read The Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  I have the whole set for the classroom, I am not sure if I will read them all, but would like to try a few for the sampling!

  1. Thanks for telling about some of the Greek gods books. Kids at our school like the topic too! If you read any more of the Little House books, try Farmer Boy. It's about Almanzo's growing up & I remember being amazed at how hard they worked on the farm. It made me admire some of my older relatives even more. Thanks Kathryn.

  2. Hi there. Thank you for also mentioning some of the contemporary titles that look into Greek mythology. I'm looking into introducing more of this to my ten year old daughter, and perhaps some of the titles you shared could be a good place to start.

I'm glad that you found A Wrinkle in Time interesting. I have a special affinity with the entire series as I used it with my book club session with gifted girls. They loved it. I also found it interesting that you linked it with Lowry's The Giver series, as that was the next series that we talked about in our book club. Lovely connections. :)

  3. I haven't re-read Wrinkle in Time since I first read it in elementary school but I was lukewarm on it when I was a kid.

It would be interesting to re-read it as an adult.

  4. I was one of those who just loved A Wrinkle in Time. I still to this day reread it at least once a year. I'm really interested in looking up the graphic novels dealing with the Greek Gods.

  5. I love the idea of fostering the interest in Greek mythology! So many of the myths relate to what they will be reading in the future and they are great stories! D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths is a great collection, as well.
    Thanks for sharing!

  6. Thanks for sharing these titles, Kathryn. The author of the Goddess Girls books recently donated some of her books in German to a school in my district, so I'm looking forward to checking out the English versions. She also wrote a picture book called Zero the Hero that I just ordered this year for our library.

    Thanks again!

  7. The Goddess Girls books are quite popular at my library. Anything that has to do with Greek myths is, actually. I read A Wrinkle in Time a few years ago, and reacted quite in the same way that you did. It's definitely an intriguing story, but I can't say it's one of my very favorites.

  8. I look forward to re-reading A Wrinkle in Time. I read it as a kid before I attending a writing conference where she spoke, but don't really recall my reaction to it then. I have such fond memories of reading the Little House in Big Woods on my own and then with my girls. I just love the story telling! I'm going to try my two daughters on the Goddess Girls, thanks for sharing!

  9. I read both the Wrinkle in Time series, and Little House series, many, many, many years ago. I've never read them as an adult! It would be interesting to go back and see how my perspective has changed.

  10. I think it is interesting that you compared Wrinkle to The Giver. The Giver is my favorite book and Wrinkle is one of my least favorite. However I have reread The Giver many times and haven't read Wrinkle since middle school- maybe I need to reread.
I love the Goddess Girls books- they are such a nice mixture of contemporary books and mythology.

    Happy reading this week! :)
